Pens Fire Mike Johnston

After a season and a half, Penguins fire Mike Johnston as head coach. The news of the firing was announced earlier this morning. This is another major blow this week for a team that just lost Pascal Dupuis to early retirement.

The Penguins (15-10-3) have been struggling this season with Crosby’s barely there performance and the team’s lack of communication. The only thing for the team to do was fire their coach, as previously predicted.

Mike Sullivan will replace Johnston. Sullivan was the head coach of the team’s AHL affiliate where he led the team to the top of its division with an 18-5 record. This is the first time Sullivan has been a head coach in the NHL since 2006 when he coached the Boston Bruins for three years.

Sullivan resume also includes being an assistant coach for eight seasons with the Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers, and Vancouver Canucks, respectively.

Sullivan’s first game behind the bench will be Monday versus Penguins’ rival Washington Capitals.
