Iginla Scores His 600th Goal

The goal may not have been worthy of a highlight reel, however, it was a significant one. Colorado Avalanche, Jarome Iginla, became the 19th player to score 600 goals on Sunday during a 4-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings.

Said goal was not meant to go in the net. Iginla was parallel to the right side of the net. His intention was to pass the puck across the crease, yet it ended up ricocheting off Kings’ defenseman Jake Muzzin’s skate, ultimately going past goalie Jhonas Enroth.

This goal actually represents Iginla’s career as a whole. It wasn’t a flashy goal. It wasn’t a sharp shooting goal. It was a sneaky, unexpected goal. As a former Calgary Flames’ player, where he scored 525 of his goals, Iginla has never been cocking or obnoxious. He’s, by far, one of the most respected and classiest players on the ice. And this goal symbolizes that. You know he’s a great player, but he always steps up in the most unexpected ways.

It took this 19-season veteran 1149 games to reach this milestone. He’s now part of an exclusive club with the likes of Wayne Gretzky (894), Gordie Howe (801), Phil Esposito (717), and Mark Messier (694) to name a few.

It’s going to be a while, possibly another two or three seasons until we witness another goal like this. Alexander Ovechkin would be next with his 496 goals and Marian Hossa is right behind him with 491 goals. Unfortunately for Sidney Crosby fans, it will be a while since he only has 313 goals.

The 600th goal for the 38-year-old is a great career memory. However, Iginla is still missing something important. Something big. Something silver. Iginla may have two Gold Medals under his belt, still he has yet to win the coveted Stanley Cup.
