Alicia’s Rant of the Week-New York Yankees

While most people look forward to Friday, I long for Monday, I blame it on years of working in the bar/restaurant business. However, Friday is here and it is time for my rant. The week has come to a close, the NBA/NHL playoffs are in full swing, the Yankees are still in the basement, and newly anointed Rams fans are still giddy about Jared Goff. While I would much rather be sitting on a beach or on a hill overlooking a vineyard at the moment, it is somewhat of a relief to get this weeks rant off my chest.

New York Yankees:

Where do I begin? Let’s start at the top. Ownership. George Steinbrenner would be rolling over in his grave if he could see his legacy being tainted by his lackluster sons. It was once said that Hank was the brawn and the mouth while Hal was the brains. Hal and Hank combined on their best days are nothing like their father. Love him, or hate him, George had a love and passion for the game that was unmatched. He brought the Yankee organization back to life. Above all, not much meant more to him than winning. What do his sons care about? Not spending money. It is pretty evident that putting a winning team on the field is not a priority. While there has been much talk about Cashman and his shortcomings, I can’t help but feel that his hands are tied.

No secret that this current Yankees team is nothing like any of the favorite Yankee teams of the past, but it goes further than that. This Yankee team is unrecognizable, and it is not just because of the men that are wearing the pinstripes. Gone are the days where teams were intimidated to play at Yankee Stadium. Gone are the days where hitters feared the mighty Yankee pitching. Gone are the days that Yankee fans sit on the edge of their seat patiently waiting for the inevitable walk-off. Yankee fans are in the days where they cross their fingers for a win. At times, you can catch a glimpse of the legendary Yankee aura, still it is mostly a thing of the past. Present day, there is no expectation only blind hope. Yankees are a long way from 29.

If the Yankees hadn’t won in 2009, the first year of the new stadium, I would be convinced that with the new stadium came a curse. The cold, generic ballpark that doubles as Yankee Stadium holds only one year of historic memories. There was no need for a new stadium, it was strictly to pay homage to George. The House That Ruth Built torn down to be replaced by The House That George Built. Add more luxury boxes, less seats for the “real” fans and there we have it: the new Yankee Stadium.

I digress, as I write this Jacoby Ellsbury left the game tonight with a hip injury. He will likely join his elders, C.C. Sabathia and ARod on the DL. Goes from bad to worse, the story of the 2016 Yankees. Is it time to panic? Some say yes, some say no it is too early. Newsflash, it was time to panic before the season even started. In one of the weakest offseasons in Yankees recent history, there should be no surprise that this team is in ruins. Even the Yankee bullpen, that was projected to be one of the best in baseball is riddled with injuries. My patience has worn thin. My condolences to those who pay the astronomical ticket price to attend a game to suffer through this shell of a baseball team. If the ownership doesn’t care about putting a decent team on the field, neither should we. Save your money, or go to Chicago, heard the two ball clubs there aren’t playing too shabby.
