NHL Once Again On the Frontlines for the LGBTQ Community

A new Kickstarter campaign is offering a new kind of adhesive tape for hockey players.

The Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services (ISMSS) at the University of Alberta has introduced Pride Tape. Instead of the usual black or white, players can choose the six-colored rainbow tape to make closeted players and fans feel welcomed.

“Pride Tape is a badge of support to LGBT youth to say you’re welcome in our sporting communities,” director of the ISMSS, Kris Wells, told CBC. “This is a way to signal that you’re an ally without having to actually say anything.”

All profits will be split between ISMSS and the You Can Play Project, an organization fighting to end homophobia in sports.

The short campaign video features the gorgeous—Whoa, that was unprofessional. The dreamy—Ugh, did it again. The talented, full sleeved—That’s the best you’re going to get—NHL player, Andrew Ference. He, besides former NHL player, Sean Avery, has been at the forefront in accepting all players in the NHL, especially young players. It seems only fitting for him to put his face to this product.

The campaign has raised almost $9,000 so far. It hopes to raise over $39,000 by Feb 3, 2016.

If this campaign gets fully funded, the NHL will once again become the face of supporting the LGBTQ community more than any other sport.
